御手洗祭で思い出すのは下鴨さんかもしれませんが、実は北天満宮でも行われている神事のひとつです。

御手洗川は金閣寺付近を源流としていて、その水が境内の神域を通って清められています。その川に入ることによって邪気を祓い身を清めると言う意味があります。
その後神様に祈りを捧げます。

実際に行ってみた

鳥居をくぐり境内に入ると京の七夕の飾りがたくさんあります。

御手洗川に入る前にろうそくを購入します。

ろうそくの火が消えないように慎重に川の中を歩いていきます。

あとはいつものようにお参りをします。
